Program for OIST Research Interns from Japan and Abroad

Through its STEM research intern program, the OIST Graduate School offers educational and research possibilities. Typically, internships last between two and six months. Students have the opportunity to learn a specific technique or gain experience in a particular laboratory through these brief sessions.

Students enrolled in bachelor’s and master’s degrees as well as recent graduates interested in enrolling in the OIST PhD program may participate in educational opportunities at OIST as Research Interns. Students can gain experience working in a research environment while being supervised by OIST faculty by participating in a research internship at the institute.

OIST, which was established on November 1st of 2011, provides education of a high caliber through classes, individual study, and extracurricular pursuits. More over half of the staff and students at this institution are drawn from outside of Japan, and all instruction and research are done in English.

ELIGIBILITY

Acceptable Courses or Subjects: STEM research internship program
Acceptable Standards: The applicants must fulfill each of the requirements below in order to be eligible:
Excellent students who are enrolled in their final two years of an undergraduate or master’s program at a university, college, junior college, or vocational school in Japan or abroad, as well as recent graduates from these institutions, are eligible to apply for the OIST Research Internship Program. At the moment, enrolled students need permission from their home institution. The applicants’ academic qualifications ought to be compatible with the host unit(s) they would like to work for at OIST.
When accepted into the OIST Research Internship program, research interns who are affiliated with a Japanese university or institution are needed to prepare and provide their own insurance.

Due to COVID-19, international travel restrictions and quarantine regulations are in effect for students arriving from countries other than Japan.

HOW TO APPLY

How to Apply Applicants must submit their applications via the online form. The internship must last between two and six consecutive months.

How to Apply: After obtaining/preparing the aforementioned documents, applicants should use this Application Form to submit their applications to the program.
The following supporting documents are required of all applicants:



  • The online application form includes a section for the Statement of Interest (write 400 words) form.
  • A transcript of grades and a diploma copy in digital form of your most recent academic transcript as well as any other transcripts from previous degrees or diplomas (BSc, MSc, etc.).
  • You need a letter of recommendation from an academic or research expert who is familiar with your work.
  • Upload a current photo of yourself that is oriented like a passport and shows your face from the front.
    Entry Requirements: Candidates may only submit their application once the application system has received at least one recommendation letter.
    English is required as a language.

BENEFITS

Positions for research interns are given out twice a year on a competitive basis. The following support will be given by OIST to accepted applicants.

Pay for Internship: 2,400 JPY every working day (Non-taxable and weekends excluded)
Travel Compensation: OIST Shuttle Bus Pass
Travel costs: One round-trip direct flight ticket (travel date will be the closest date to the term of placement)
Furnished flat on or off campus is available for guests.
Additional Support: OIST will help with obtaining visas, insurance, and local registration processes.
